On July 27, 2015, my 94-year-old father collapsed in his house (where he lived alone), and was taken by ambulance to hospital. It was determined at that time that he had pneumonia, blood clots on his lungs, and a growth on
his prostate. After a week on medication for the pneumonia and the blood clots, he had not improved. On the contrary, his condition had worsened.
Because we knew he did not want any extraordinary measures taken to prolong his life, and because some of the medication he was on was very invasive, and necessitated a blood test every 3-4 hours, we made the decision we discontinue all medication, and to provide palliative care.
On August 3, we made an application to Hospice, and he was transported to Hospice Wellington on August 4. From the moment I walked in the door, I sensed the beauty and the peace. Dad received phenomenal care, and it made his last days so much easier, for him and for us. Dad passed away on
August 21, 2015.
I was so impressed by the care and compassion received at Hospice Wellington that I knew I wanted to do something on an ongoing basis, in support of this incredible facility. And so, the idea of publishing an anthology of "stories of hope" was born. I have covered all publishing costs for this book, and am donating books to Hospice Wellington to sell, with 100% of proceeds being retained by them.
