Who Needs Little Brothers Anyway?, by Brenda Cassidy

Years ago when my boys were little, I would get ideas for potential "books" and scribble them down. I had taken a course on writing short stories for children and really enjoyed it and even wrote some pretty good short stories. Nothing ever came of it, but I still would jot down ideas. I got the idea of writing a humorous book about a big brother getting a little brother, because of having boys myself. I

thought it would be a good book to read to a child who is going to be getting a little brother. But once again, life got in the way and everything just went on the back burner and got shoved into a file box.

Many years went by. My boys are grown. I have grandchildren now. Last year I ended up being off work for awhile and had more time on my hands. I pulled that file box out and started going through things that I had written. And there were those little notes for my idea on the little brothers book. I sat down with that and I realized that this was something that I should have done a long time ago. It was always my dream to have something in print. Now even more so since I have children and grandchildren I would love to share it with. Suddenly I felt very compelled to do this and not give up this time. So I sat down that afternoon and finished that story and could see the illustrations so clear in my mind. I wrote

down in detail the illustrations I could picture in my mind. But now the reality set in. How was I going to accomplish this?

Time went by again, and my "book" was once again put away.

A few years ago I had met Lisa Browning and we had become friends. We ended up losing touch for awhile but then had reconnected on facebook. I always felt bad for losing touch and was very glad for a chance to reconnect. So we got together to

catch up and I knew we wouldn't lose touch again. People that are meant to be on your path will always be brought back into your life somehow. Lisa and I have so many things in common and I feel a deep connection to her. During one of our get-togethers Lisa told me that besides editing, she was now trying her hand at publishing and doing very well with it. I mentioned that I had some ideas but never knew what to do with them. Lisa told me to show her sometime and she would give me her honest opinion. I really appreciated that and the next time we got together I showed Lisa my "book". When she said she really liked it, that made me feel really good. But then she brought up the idea of seeing if Big Brothers would possibly sponsor my book. Well, now I was getting really excited.

And then came the idea to have a big brother along with his little brother do the illustrations. When this was presented and accepted by Big Brothers, I was still in disbelief. I still have to pinch myself to make myself believe that my dream is coming true. There is a lesson to be learned in this. Never give up on your dreams, no matter how much time has gone by. Believe in yourself and believe that it is never too late to turn your dreams into reality.
