Telling Your Story, Speaking Your Truth ... by Lisa Browning
It had been on my To-Do list for months, to publish a book to help inspire others to tell your own story. Knowing that I would be a vendor at the Eden Mills Writers’ Festival in September, my plan was to have the book published in time for that. The project was continually put on the back burner, as I gave priority to my clients. A little more than a month before Eden Mills, I realized that I would never be able to get it done. “No, not if you write it yourself,” said that little voice that always comes to me as I walk my dog on the trail. “But if you get other people to write it for you ....” The idea intrigued me, and the more I thought about it, the more I realized it could work. But time was tight. My printer usually needs a three-week turnaround, and I would still have to edit all submissions, and format the final version. I sent an email to several people who have written for me in the past. “I have good news and not-so-good news,” I told them. The good news: the stories would only have to be between 500 and 1,000 words. The not-so-good news: I’d need them within five days. I was amazed. Within five days, I have received 13 submissions. Editing went by seamlessly, as did the formatting. I was advised that I would need 74 pages, given the page size I wanted. When I finished the formatting, I had ... you guess it ... 74 pages. Off it went to the printer, and I received 750 copies in time for Eden Mills. I was incredibly grateful for the response to my call for submissions. I was even more grateful, and humbled, by the content of those submissions. Telling Your Story, Speaking Your Truth is a quick read, but an inspirational one. It is my hope that it will inspire others to tell their story, because I know first-hand the sense of empowerment that comes from doing so. Telling Your Story, Speaking Your Truth is available free of charge, with the purchase of any book currently listed on www.ottbookstore.com.
